Duneland Project Receives Recognition in Engineering News-Record and NWI Times

NIPSCO_Wheatfield_Pilings.jpgIn the April 24, 2013 edition of The Times newspaper, one of Duneland Group's projects received recognition as one of the region's largest projects in the Midwest in 2012. Merrillville-based NIPSCO’s R.M. Schahfer Generating Station's more than $500 million upgrade in Wheatfield was among three local projects named as as the Midwest Top Project Starts of 2012. The project also received recognition in the April issue of Engineering News-Record Midwest magazine.

Duneland Group completed pile staking work on the esteemed project, which began in January 2012 and is scheduled for completion in 2015.

“This type of industry recognition is really a testament to the dedicated men and women working on this project day-in and day-out,” NIPSCO spokesman Nick Meyer was quoted in the Times article as saying. “And, it all boils down to solid planning and preparation combined with focused project management and execution. We have a great team.”

NIPSCO_Wheatfield_Pilings2.jpgMeyer was quoted as relaying that the project is part of NIPSCO’s long-term environmental strategy, focusing on upgrading their system to meet new and upcoming environmental regulations.

“Specifically, the Schahfer project will improve local air quality by further reducing emissions associated with generating electricity,” Meyer said. “Equally important, this project contributes to the long-term sustainability of our region from an economic development standpoint. These projects span multiple years and they’re providing nearly 1,000 jobs throughout that timeframe. And, better air-quality plays an important role for this region as businesses are looking to locate or expand in the area.”

The project has received other accolades, Meyer said, but the safety performance to date is notable, better than the top 10 percent of companies with similar projects.
