City of Portage Parks and Recreation

Portage, Indiana

Largely a rustic nature trail through woodlands and wetlands, the Iron Horse Heritage Trail runs 5.1 miles with 1.5 miles paved, between Imagination Glen Park (Samuelson Road) and Hamstrom Road in Portage, Indiana.  All of the trail design and center line survey work was completed by Duneland Group. The bike/pedestrian trail connects the already completed Iron Horse Heritage Trail (Phase I) to Woodland Park in the City of Portage. Duneland Group is providing the engineering, surveying and design on the 1.6-mile, shared use path connecting Phase I of the Iron Horse Heritage Trail to Woodland Park in Portage, Indiana. The trail for Phase II begins where Phase I ended. Iron Horse Heritage Trail then runs southeasterly along the Wabash railroad right of way to Hamstrom Road then south along Hamstrom Road to Lakewood Avenue. The trail runs west along the northerly right of way line of Lakewood Avenue through a residential neighborhood then continuing westerly through a wooded area parallel to the Indiana Toll Road to Willowcreek Road, then northerly along Willowcreek Road and back to Woodland Park.
